Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment (ソードアート・オンライン －ホロウ・フラグメント－?) is a video game based on the Sword Art Online light novel series. It is an expanded remake of the original game Sword Art Online: Infinity Moment for the PlayStation Portable. It was released in Japan on April 23, 2014, and in Hong Kong on May 29, 2014. A North American and PAL release was on August 19, 2014, and August 20, 2014, respectively.
A sequel of the game is in the planning stage.
Though it is not one itself, Hollow Fragment simulates gameplay found in an MMORPG. Only Kirito is playable. Kirito will automatically auto attack if he is left alone next to an enemy. The burst gauge can be used by pressing the circle button (default controls). Using the burst gauge at the right time causes the player to use a designated sword skill at the end of the combo that has increased damage and hit percentage. Players can use a variety of skills, some of which expand SP, points battle points that can be earned by attacking, praising your partner, or by a few other means. These skills take a variety of forms from being powerful attacking skills to powerful buffs. The player can learn skills by going to their menu and going to skills. Inside is a skill tree that allows players to spend skill points on ten trees, each pertaining to a separate weapon type.
Dozens of AI controlled partners can accompany Kirito when he goes off to explore dungeons. Players interact with their partners in battle and can issue many commands, such as asking them to use a skill or defend. A risk meter gradually fills up while in combat, slowing the recovery speed of the burst gauge and causing increased damage from enemies. When this happens players can "switch" with their partner, reducing the risk gauge to one.
Elements of a dating sim is utilized when interacting with some of your companions outside of battle.
Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment currently holds a score of 66/100 on Metacritic.
The script of the game has been criticized for its poor translation.
